Hitachi Debut 1-Terabyte Hard Drive PDF Print E-mail

Hitachi Global Storage Technologies announced first 1-terabyte hard disk drive. 1TB drive is expected to ship sometime at 2007 and Hitachi is the first to announce it's drive. According to Hitachi, the drive will ships in the first quarter of 2007, and will cost about $399-- much less than a 750GB drives today. Dekstar 7K1000 will debut at the 2007 International CES, also known as the Consumer Electronics Show at Last Vegas and at the Storage Visions storage conference.

The drive will come in 3 flavors but only Deskstart version is available at launch. CinemaStart version, for use in DVR dan set-top boxes, and enterprise version will be released in the second quarter of 2007. Seagate has confirmed their intention to ship a 1TB drive in the first half of 2007 but no further detail offered.

The Deskstar 7K1000 will be a five-platter drive, each platter capable of storing 200GB apiece. Hitachi's 1TB model uses perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) to achieve its high capacity point. The 7K1000 is Hitachi's first 3.5-inch hard drive to use PMR technology. First hard drive was shipped at 1956. It took 35 years to reach 1GB in 1991, 14 years to reach 500GB in 2005, and just 2 years to reach 1TB. Overall it took 51 years to get to 1TB. Detail about Deskstar 7K1000 can be found here.
