Hybrid Storage Alliance, Hitachi, Seagate, Fujitsu, Toshiba, and Samsung, seeks to extend life of mobile laptop batteries, reduce heat and improve performance by using a platter-based drive combine with a 256MB Flash Memory built-in.
The Flash Memory will serve as a very large cache where part of boot or sleep sequence can be store there to shorten boot or wake up time. The Flash Memory will handle all reads, writes and will dump data to hard disk when memory fills up. This will save battery power because hard drives can spin down due to decreased use. The other benefit will include longer lifespan of the drive, less heat, and improved durability. All this benefit will add about 15% cost compared to ordinary hard drive. |
